Self Discovery - Misunderstanding of self and SELF

Discovery is simply the revealing of a misunderstanding.

The whole of the western world used to believe that our little planet Earth was at the center of the Universe. That misunderstanding was plainly revealed by Copernicus and thank you very much to Mr. Copernicus for all the lessons in that. Since then we have even been able to mock openly: “How ridiculous, that humans could be so egocentric!” But they were!

Then how about the belief that the world was flat? That little misunderstanding was laid nicely in its grave too when Mr. Columbus arrived back from the Americas. Thanks to you too Mr. Columbus - and again afterwards, “How ridiculous that humans could be so naïve to think that when looking out into the sky there were all those spherical objects loping around yet the object underneath our feet should be the only flat one!”

One more misunderstanding waiting for a revealing light:

How about turning ideas regarding the self inside out in the same way? We are conditioned to think that the self is the individual: that is “you”, as in “yourself”.

Taken that way there are indeed many selves but what about that which all the selves are part of? We talk of self because there is nothing more personal but how about taking the perspective that the Real Self is the collection of all those previously thought of individual selves. Go on try it and see if the cap fits. Remember you now accept that the world is not flat. If that is the Self then you, whoever you are or whatever you think you are, are that Self too. So have you got that nice fitting cap on now! The self is definitely not at the center of the universe then, but the SELF is something else entirely. Walk around a little and see how you like that nice new cap. You are the Self just as anybody else is the Self and so by definition you are clearly so much more than that little body and mind that you thought you were right? Just keep on checking it out, keep walking around and enjoy your new cap and at the same time you can have enormous fun with your mind and body resting in the real SELF.
